It depends on the amount, too.
You should go to the bank where the check was issued and ask  the teller to cash the check.  As long as the account (check account) has enough fund & the check amount is not great,
you can cash the check.  The bank may call the person who issued the check to verify....  Let the person know that you plan to cash the check, in case....
